Our history and evolution

Founded in 1975 with just 14 members, the AISSA represents all of South Australia’s 105 Independent schools in 2026.

Established to represent the needs and aspirations of Independent schools, the AISSA has evolved over time as a trusted peak body. Today we advocate for the sector, whilst providing leadership support, professional development, and evidence-informed consultancy services.

As the sector has grown and diversified, the AISSA has continued to adapt, broadening our expertise, deepening our partnerships, and expanding our support for schools and early learning centres.

We remain committed to championing choice, fostering excellence, and ensuring Independent education continues to contribute meaningfully to South Australia’s educational landscape.

Our national connection

The AISSA is a member of Independent Schools Australia (ISA), the national peak body for the Independent school sector. As a member of ISA, we contribute to and benefit from a collective voice that represents Independent schools at a national level. This membership ensures we influence national policy, research and best practice, and champion the unique needs and strengths of our local school communities.

We are proud to be part of a strong, collaborative national network of Independent school associations across Australia. Through this connection, we work alongside like-minded organisations to advocate for excellence, choice and diversity in Independent schooling.

Our national affiliations strengthen our ability to support schools, share knowledge, and advance high-quality education for students and families across Australia.
